Introduction:
Team COHSWAFS visited Samaru community to sensitize them on the dangers of water pollution by open defecation. We took time out to investigate one of the important streams in the community for pollutants and the possible ways of making it free of the pollutants.
A popular slaughter slab in Samaru uses the stream to dispose animal wastes and also wash their products. We approached them and talked to them to see reasons why the stream should not be subjected to such level of pollution. The stream is a very important source of water for the community dwellers. They depend on it for bathing and cooking.
Aim of the visitation:
- To sensitize the community dwellers on the dangers of water pollution on human and animal health.
-To enable the community dwellers understand the economic benefits of keeping water bodies safe and free from pollutants,
especially from human faeces and other non biodegradable products.
- Outcome/conclusion: the people were pleased with us and were willing to comply with our plea to protect water sources in the community. They accepted a follow up visit from us so they can learn more from about safe water and health. We greed to visit them soonest to present to them how they can turn the available source of water around them into portable water.
